The locals call it the train

You'll notice New Yorkers rarely use the word "subway". It is often referred to as simply "the train." As a native New Yorker I say "the train." As I got older and my world started to expand into other forms of rail-based transportation, I simply adjusted the rest of my vocabulary, referring to all other non-subway rail transportation by its proper name. For example, the LIRR is "the railroad."

"Lets take the railroad and then we'll get the train at 34th."

Amtrak is Amtrak, the Metro North is the Metro North, and so on.

I was reminded of this quirk today on my way to work. A young man approached me and asked "Where's the train station?" I knew immediately he wasn't talking about Penn or Grand Central. So I directed him down the block to the nearest train station. Where he could catch the A, E, C, F, or V.

Most any train indeed.
